Make Your Own Cleaning Products This Spring

If you’re making your spring chore list, giving your home a deep cleaning may be on your list. After all, it is spring and spring cleaning seems to be a must-do when the season rolls in each year. Of course, that means a wide variety of cleaning products in order to clean the various surfaces in your apartment. If you’ve been thinking about making your own cleaning products, here are some recipes you can try.

Everyone needs a good all-purpose cleaner. They are great for cleaning countertops, bathroom sinks and just about anywhere you want to give a quick scrub.

  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 10 drops lavender, tea tree or lemon essential oil

Mix the above ingredients and put in a spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water to the top and shake gently. You now have an all-purpose cleaner to use in your home.

Glass Cleaner

Spring is an ideal time to clean your windows. Of course, you want a cleaning solution that will limit streaks and make your windows look their best. Try this one:

  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups of water
  • *Optional – 8-12 drops of essential oils of your choice

Combine everything in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix. (You want to make sure the cornstarch is fully incorporated as this is the ingredient to help reduce streaks.) This cleaner also works well on mirrors.

Floor Cleaner

This easy floor cleaner is good for laminate, tile, hardwoods – just about any floor type.

  • 2 cups of warm water
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 3 drops liquid dish soap (Dawn is recommended)
  • *Optional – 8-10 drops of essential oils of your choice

You can combine this in a mop bucket or spray bottle and use to clean your floors.

Garbage Disposal Cleaner

If your garbage disposal is not smelling as fresh as you like, here’s a quick fix. Cut up a lemon into small pieces. Place one or two pieces in each section of an ice cube mold. Fill the ice cube tray with white vinegar and freeze. Once the cubes are frozen, you can drop a few down your garbage disposal and turn the disposal on. This will help to keep your garbage disposal smelling better.

Stain Remover (for clothes)

A simple stain remover that you can keep in a spray bottle can be a lifesaver when it comes to keeping your clothes fresh. This one is easy and safe to use.

  • ¼ cup dishwashing liquid (Dawn is recommended)
  • ½ cup 3% hydrogen peroxide

Mix and pour into a spray bottle for easy use. You can also add a little bit of baking soda if you need some help deodorizing and a little extra help removing the stains.

Disinfecting Wipes

Many people love those easy to use wipes that are great for just about any surface, but you can make something similar at home. Grab a large jar and fill it with some washcloths, cut up rags, t-shirts you’re no longer using – essentially anything you can use to wipe down surfaces. Then make the following cleaning solution:

  • 1 cup of water
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 2 tablespoons dish soap (Dawn is recommended)

Stir and pour over your rags. You can add additional water if you need more to cover your cleaning rags or you can make another batch of the cleaning solution.
