Whether you’ve camped out early on the Friday after Thanksgiving or you’ve only seen it in headlines in the news, you probably have the assumption that it’s the time of year when retailers offer their best deals. That used to be true, but not so much anyone. As more people turn to the Internet to do their shopping, retailers have started putting more effort into their online offerings, resulting in the Monday after Black Friday becoming a shopping day in its own right.

How Cyber Monday Differs from Black Friday

Some people still prefer to get up early to beat the crowds on Black Friday, but it’s hard to argue with the convenience of shopping online. With smartphones becoming more capable each passing year, online shopping becomes easier, too. You can shop a lot quicker from the seat of your couch at home than you can by hopping in the car to head to the supermarket.

That’s not to say that Cyber Monday beats out Black Friday. For one, shopping online doesn’t allow you to see the product in person. If you’re planning on buying clothes on Cyber Monday, you run the risk or purchasing something that might not fit correctly. Similarly, a television might not seem as big in person as you thought it looked online. Shopping in-person, you have a better idea of what you’re buying before you shell out your hard-earned money.

Which Day Has the Better Deals

Many shoppers can forego ease and convenience if they’re getting a solid deal on a product. So, which holiday has the better prices? Unfortunately, you have to be a bit of a fortune teller to know which day is better to shop on. You just never know what deals a retailer is going to offer, how their stock will fare over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, and if they’ll be extending the deal any further out.

That said, some have noticed some general trends that might be helpful for the curious shopper. Most notably, experts generally agree that electronics shoppers will find better deals on Black Friday, while those looking for beauty products and clothes will have more luck on Cyber Monday. Don’t take these generalizations too much to heart, though. It’s always best to do a little of your own research.

Each year since 2006, when etail analyst Ellen Davis coined the term “Cyber Monday,” the day has grown in popularity. It’s not really a surprise either, as phones become more advanced and in the hands of many more users. As a result, we’re beginning to see retailers work on their online game in order to better compete, blurring the lines between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Take, for example, the Internet’s leading retailer, Amazon. Not only does Amazon participate in Black Friday, but it also extends the holiday to a week packed full of deals. Plus, it offers deals on other days throughout the year, like its own, branded “Prime Day,” which happens in July. This might just point to a future where shoppers are always on the lookout for a good deal, no matter what time of the year it is.

It’s tough to say where the future of Black Friday and Cyber Monday will look like, even in the next few years. For now, though, it’s worth checking your go-to retailer’s sites on Cyber Monday. You might just find a deal you wouldn’t get anywhere else at any other time – even on Black Friday!
