What Gym Is Right for Me?

So, you’ve decided that it’s time to get in shape, and what better way to do that than sign up for a gym? Indeed, joining a gym is a great way to motivate yourself to exercise on a regular basis, and you’ll be surrounding yourself with people who also want to get in shape. There’s some difficulty, however, in choosing the gym that’s right for you. With plenty of options around, you might not know where to start. Here are some of the popular gyms and what you can expect from each one.

Retro Fitness

At more than 100 locations strong, most on the East Coast, Retro Fitness should be a little familiar. While Retro has all of the amenities that you would expect from a bigger gym–trainers, tanning beds, and all the requisite equipment–there are a few fun features that help set it apart. For one, Retro Fitness has a cardio movie theater, a big screen in front of cardio equipment, so you can immerse yourself in a flick while going through your motions. Plus, you can cool down after your exercise with a drink from Retro Fitness’ in-gym smoothie bar.

LA Fitness

Although LA Fitness obviously gets its name from a little town on the West Coast, the brand of workout centers is huge. You can expect to pay a higher price here than at other gyms, but you’ll find that money put to good use – LA Fitness offers up amenities that you won’t find at the smaller gyms, including a basketball court, swimming pool, and spa. There’s also a designated space for kids, so if you can still have the little ones in tow while you get your reps in.

Planet Fitness

Sweating it out in front of a bunch of strangers can be an uncomfortable experience, and it’s those negative feelings that Planet Fitness is adamant about stifling. Self-described as a “judgement free zone,” Planet Fitness bills itself as a safe space for you to get your workouts in, no matter your experience level. Membership to this gym runs on the lower end of the spectrum, though it offers a higher tier with exclusive perks such as discounts.

Anytime Fitness

If you’re looking for a good mix of all the types of equipment and amenities you need to get in shape, Anytime Fitness might be your gym. Along with the standard exercise bikes and free weights, you can also find here heavy bags, rowing machines, and kettlebells. Anytime Fitness also offers both classes and small group training sessions. If all that sounds good to you, there’s a seven-day free trial to check out the gym and see if it’s a fit.

These gyms are well-known and it’s not difficult to find reviews that go into detail about what you should be expecting. However, it’s worth remembering the right gym for you might not even be on this list. There might be a great local gym just around the corner that doesn’t get the same publicity but offers exactly what you need. If none of these gyms seem to be doing the most to help you reach your fitness goals, don’t be afraid to branch out and try other centers.
