Why it’s Important to Backup Your Photos and Files

It goes without saying that the invention of the Internet revolutionized our modern lives. Then, in 2007, the invention of the smartphone changed our lives again. Everything is mobile-based today to accommodate the use of tablets, androids, and iPhones. Our whole lives are on these devices—from photos and home videos, to work files and networking contacts. We are lost without them, but we also have to remember that these devices are simply machines capable of breaking.

If you don’t back up the information on your device, then you run the risk of losing it forever. So where do you save all of your valuable information?

It used to be that storing information on floppy disks, CD’s, flash drives, and hard drives was commonplace, but the trouble with all of these is that you can’t access them anywhere you go. What’s more, storing information this way is risky because you’re limited by a physical object, which can get lost, stolen, or broken. Now, we have a storage system called The Cloud, which allows you to access any of your files from any device at any time. Cloud technology makes it easy to store and share information with others, and keeps private information safe.

Here’s how to back up your files using iCloud:

iCloud is an Apple based cloud system, but you don’t have to have an Apple product to use it. It is compatible with any device with an app. To set up your iCloud, you must have an iCloud email account to secure your information. To back up your iPhone to iCloud, follow these steps:

  1.     Connect to a trusted WiFi network
  2.     Go to Settings > [Your Name] > and iCloud
  3.     Select iCloud Backup
  4.     Click Backup Now
  5.     To Double Check that the sync worked, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage

From here on out, iCloud will automatically backup everyday as long as you are connected to WiFi and connected to a power source. This makes saving a breeze. It’s a hassle to manually save everything. Now, you don’t have to worry about losing a single thing. Apple gives you 5GB out of the gate, but if you want more, you can always purchase more space.

Sync Google Drive on Your Computer:

Google Drive—this is an Android or Google based cloud system. Likewise, you are able to use this cloud system on Apple products, but it does require the use of apps.  You also need to have a Gmail email to login and store your information.

You are also able to save any files that you want to keep on your computer with Google Drive. Follow these steps:

  1.     Go to Google and login to your Gmail account.
  2.     Click the Google Drive icon (Multicolor Triangle)
  3.     In the top right, click the Gear Icon
  4.     Click Download Backup and Sync
  5.     Click the files and folders that you wish to save

In addition to iCloud and Google Drive, there are various other cloud based storage systems, such as OneDrive and DropBox. Each program has a slightly different interface with pros and cons. It all depends on how you want to use it, and what makes sense to you. Test them all out to see which one you like best. Backing up your device’s data is something you should do periodically to avoid losing any files you care about.
